Small Stockroom Layout: Organize a Spare Room, Garage or Storage Unit
A good layout saves you steps on every order. Most small stockrooms need the same four zones, in the same order your stock moves through them.
Follow the flow of stock
Inventory moves in one direction: it arrives, gets processed, gets stored, gets picked, gets packed and leaves. Lay out your space in that order so you never carry an item backward.
- Receiving / intake: a table or floor area by the door for boxes coming in.
- Processing: where you photograph, measure, list and label. Good light matters here.
- Storage: your labeled shelves and bins.
- Packing and shipping: a desk with boxes, mailers, tape, a scale and your label printer, closest to the exit.
Shelving and bins
- Adjustable steel or heavy plastic shelving is the workhorse. Check the weight rating per shelf.
- Clear or open-front bins let you see contents. Use the same bin size where you can, so locations are interchangeable.
- Hanging racks for clothing, with location tags on the rail and a SKU tag on each hanger.
- Flat files or shallow drawers for paper goods, cards and small items.
- Leave gaps. A shelf at 100% has no room for returns or new stock. Aim for about 80% full.
Put fast movers closest
A small share of your SKUs usually accounts for most of your orders. Find them (the cycle count planner's A items are a good start) and store them between waist and shoulder height, nearest the packing desk. Slow movers and bulky items go higher, lower and farther away.
Golden zone: the shelves between your waist and your shoulders are the fastest to pick from and the safest for your back. Reserve them for your best sellers.
Keep a clear path
Leave a walkway wide enough to carry a box comfortably. Number your shelving units in walking order so a pick list sorted by location is also your route. If you use a garage, keep stock off the bare floor on pallets or shelves, away from water and car fumes.
Safety basics
- Anchor tall shelving units to the wall so they can't tip.
- Heaviest items on the lowest shelves.
- Use a step stool, not a shelf, to reach high.
- Keep exits and electrical panels clear.
- Store anything flammable or temperature-sensitive (candles, aerosols, cosmetics) per the label's guidance.
Then give it addresses
Once the furniture is in place, give every shelf and bin a code. Start with the bin location system guide, sketch it on the printable bin location map, and print labels with the label maker.
